Speaker Bio
William (Bill) Moore is the Principal at The Strategy Group and Senior Fellow with the Midwest Center for Nonprofit Leadership. Bill serves on the Olathe Human Relations Commission providing leadership on racial equity, diversity and inclusion for Olathe, KS.

Bill has spent his entire career working in our most challenged communities - both urban and rural - and with vulnerable populations to find solutions to our most pressing social, education, and health concerns. As the former Vice-President of Programs and Evaluation at the REACH Healthcare Foundation he designed and guided implementation of community projects designed to give rural communities a chance to redefine what it means to live in rural America and be healthy. In Kansas City, Kansas he led the investment of funds to find out why urban economically disadvantaged persons and their families could not access the health care services they needed. And, at the Institute for Research and Reform in Education he worked with dozens of under-performing urban schools to improve the engagement of students, the alignment of instructional content, and the rigor of curricula to prepare youth for academic success and improved life chances.

Previously, Bill served as the first Director of the Civic Engagement Technical Assistance Center for the US Department of Education, Director of Research in two urban school systems and at the University of Kansas Medical Center. He is a former professor at Auburn University and the University of Kansas Medical Center and Senior Research Associate at the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation.

Essential Features of Nonprofit Sustainability
Topic 1 Description
Sustainability for nonprofit professionals is a vaguely
defined and misunderstood concept, often described
by proposal authors as securing sufficient funding to
maintain programmatic or organizational operations.
Recent attempts to define and identify key features of
sustainability have contributed to a richer understanding
of the complexity of sustainability and the factors that
influence longevity and potential for impact. This
presentation offers the perspective that financial stability is a
necessary but insufficient condition for organizational
sustainability: other factors are essential for long-term stability and impact. Well-regarded models of
sustainability go beyond effective management and
engaged boards to include dimensions such as adaptive
capacity, innovation, and other practices. In short,
sustainability is the result of a complex interplay of many
interdependent practices, behaviors, and decisions. This
presentation synthesizes the dominant characterizations and
features of sustainability and presents several common
dimensions. Grant professionals, nonprofit leaders, and
stakeholders can examine these key dimensions of
sustainability, use the provided rating scales to assess
their own organizational status, and plan for future
internal capacity building.

Network weaving is a strategy to engage community, empower residents to take action to improve their own communities, and create the capacity for any community to innovate, act, learn and grow by building a network of people and organizations interested in pressing issues or community problems, encouraging many people to initiate collaborative action to transform their community.
