Hiring a Grant Writer

Join Forefront and the Association of Consultants to Nonprofits for the upcoming Ask A Consultant: an interactive, solutions-oriented, virtual office hour with experienced consultants focusing on participants’ burning questions.

We regularly get questions about grant writing: How do I find a consultant? How do I know it's the right match for my organization? Can an intern write grants? Should they be paid hourly or by the project? Are state grants easier to get than private foundation grants? Is my organization ready to apply for grants?

Rachel Sacks, MPH has nearly 15 years of experience writing successful grants for health and human services nonprofits. As President of Leading Healthy Futures, she helps her clients conceptualize, define, and actualize new ideas for grant opportunities and partnerships, and is adept at translating complex information into easily understandable language for lay audiences. Since 2018, over 85% of the grants written by Rachel and her team were awarded, amounting to more than $24 million in awarded dollars to their nonprofit clients.

Liz Duffrin is a grant writer specializing in education and youth development who has raised more than $9 million for Chicago-area nonprofits. A former journalist, she also writes articles, web features, reports, and strategic plans.

Joyce Poll offers high-level comprehensive and competitive grant writing services for nonprofit organizations and has raised over $100MM during her career. She has a strong record of securing funds for innovative, strategic projects and specializes in the fields of health and disabilities, children and youth, and human and social services.

For more than 25 years, Theresa Lipo has been serving some of Chicago’s leading social service agencies and educational institutions as both a staff member and independent consultant, identifying and securing program support from both public and private sector funders. Currently Youth Guidance’s Senior Manager for public funding, Theresa is also an adjunct counsel with Ter Molen, Watkins & Brandt and a former board member of the Association of Consultants to Nonprofits.
